New in the Fairytale Forest: The Princess and the Pea
14 May 2025Today, the curtains around the fairy tale The Princess and the Pea opened, revealing Efteling’s newest princess. Welcome to the Fairytale Forest, Princess Adinda!
Early today, a motley crew walked to the edge of the Fairytale Forest. There, between the fairy tales Woman Hollow and the Troll King, a girl, Adinda, was staying in the royal gazebo. She claimed to be a princess from a distant land. So the queen hid a pea under a whole pile of mattresses. Everyone was wondering whether the girl had slept well. Actually, they hoped not, because only a real princess is sensitive enough to feel a small pea under a pile of mattresses. The lackeys slid open the curtains around the royal pavilion and there they saw the girl at the very top of a huge pile of mattresses. Adinda didn't look very well-rested. She had been tossing and turning all night because there was something hard under her mattress. So she was a real princess after all!

The 31st fairy tale features a sung narration, performed by Belgian singer Geike Arnaert to a melody by house composer René Merkelbach. The song nicely conveys the moral of the fairy tale. Indeed, the 31st fairy tale shows like no other that true beauty and delicacy are deep within.
This song can be heard from 16 May not only in the Fairytale Forest, but also on Spotify and other streaming services. On the music album, you will hear the sung narration "The Princess on the Pea”, the instrumental version “As you are” and the background music “Beauty in the Twilight”.
The story of The Princess and the Pea
At the palace gate stood a girl in a tattered dress, soaked from the rain. She claimed to be a princess from a faraway land. The queen wasn’t convinced. She had a guest bed prepared with a tall stack of mattresses and hid a single little pea underneath. Only a real princess would feel it. The next morning, the girl said she hadn’t slept a wink because something hard kept her awake. And so it was clear: she was a true princess…
