The gold mine is open again!

13 November 2025

The major maintenance on the dive coaster Baron 1898 has been completed. The revamped souvenir shop, and the food locations all reopened last week, the ride reopened yesterday.

Will you soon be plunging 37.5 metres down into the mine again? Baron 1898 is open once more!

In September and October, the dive coaster Baron 1898 was temporarily closed for extensive maintenance. In addition to painting both inside and out, several mechanical components—such as the brakes and motors—were overhauled. Stucco was applied, new textures were added, tiles were replaced, and lighting was renewed. In short, the ride is ready for the next ten years! Take a look behind the scenes.

Over the past weeks, the entire ride was covered in scaffolding so the full track could be repainted and recoated. Using aerial work platforms, we were also able to reach the high sections of the track.
Various ride elements were serviced during the maintenance, including the bell tower.
Many disciplines work together to reopen the attraction. The brake section was repainted, anti-slip was added to the platforms, the brakes were revised and reinstalled, and of course, the safety nets were reattached.
To transport and install components like the motors and brakes, we used a gantry crane.
You've never seen the gold nuggets in the tunnel of the ride like this before—after all, the Wailing Women always used to block your view!

De Gevoelighe Plaet: for photos and souvenirs

At De Gevoelighe Plaet, discover the renewed range of photo products and souvenirs—must-haves for true miners! Think clothing like hoodies, T-shirts, socks, and matching accessories such as a cool canvas bag and a cap. The new shop also offers magnets, keychains, postcards, a mug, and chocolate gold bars. And of course, the new pin set with three pins (EPP 492–494)! There’s even a miniature of the ride and a gold nugget available! Gift tip: the book about Baron 1898 has been reissued in a luxury hardcover edition.

Construction of new free-fall ride Hooghmoed

For visitors who find Baron 1898 a bit too thrilling—or who don't yet meet the 1.32-metre height requirement—Efteling will open a new family-friendly free-fall ride in summer 2026: Hooghmoed. During the maintenance on Baron 1898, construction work also began on this new attraction. Groundwork has been completed, underground infrastructure has been installed, and even the foundation has been started.

The outlines of the new free-fall ride Hooghmoed are becoming visible.

Food locations 't Melkhuysje and De Verkleumde Kompel reopened

With the reopening of the ride, the food stands ’t Melkhuysje and De Verkleumde Kompel have also reopened. Just like last year, you can customise your own hot chocolate at De Verkleumde Kompel. Choose from syrup flavours like banana, coconut, roasted hazelnut, or pumpkin spice, and top your drink with dark chocolate, marshmallows, speculoos crumbs, or a gingerbread man.

Warm up at De Verkleumde Kompel after your thrilling ride on Baron 1898.
