Major Maintenance at Baron 1898
07 August 2025Efteling fans may have already spotted it in the maintenance calendar: dive coaster Baron 1898 will be closed for nine weeks after the summer. What exactly is going to happen?

Ride Maintenance
Since 2015, you’ve plunged 37.5 metres down into the mine aboard Baron 1898, in search of gold. After ten years of loyal service, the time has come for a thorough maintenance. That’s why the attraction will temporarily close in September and October.
Project manager Lorenzo Langelaar explains: “Various mechanical components, such as motors and brakes, will be overhauled. The track will also be repainted. Parts of the track will be scaffolded, so we can keep working even in bad weather. The Baron knows: time is money... We’ll use aerial platforms to reach the highest points. The building and 't Melkhuysje will also be scaffolded so we can restore plasterwork and apply a fresh coat of paint with new decorations. And of course, catering location De Verkleumde Kompel is getting a new look too.”

Lorenzo continues: “We’re replacing both show and work lighting with LED. The queue line will get brand-new wooden fences, and the accessible queue will receive a new covered section. Inside, we’re repainting and refreshing the interior, and renewing some of the tiles. Essential ride elements will be thoroughly checked and restored so the well-oiled machine can keep delivering gold for the Baron.”

De Gevoelighe Plaet – for photos and souvenirs
During the maintenance, we’re also revamping the photo shop at Baron 1898. The layout will be changed to offer an open design with room for both photos and souvenirs. New counters will be added, including a photo desk and self-scan checkout. The shop will reopen under a new name: De Gevoelighe Plaet.
Construction of new drop tower: Hooghmoed
For guests who find Baron 1898 a bit too intense or are not tall enough (1.32m), a brand-new family drop tower called Hooghmoed will open in summer 2026. During Baron’s maintenance, construction will begin. We’ll clear the area, remove pavement, lighting, and plants. After groundworks, we’ll install the infrastructure and foundation for the new attraction.
