Efteling breaks the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for the Tallest stack of pancakes

During a tense and exciting gathering at Efteling’s pancake restaurant, Polles Keuken, Efteling chefs John Pijnappels and Humphrey den Otter broke the world record for pancake stacking. Under the watchful eye of an official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS adjudicator, the world record was improved by 3,8 cm in building a stack of pancakes no less than 91,2 cm (35,91 inch) in height.

Thrilling record attempt
Efteling chefs John Pijnappels and Humphrey den Otter were on the lookout for an intriguing challenge that complemented their work at Efteling. Their idea, to attempt a world record for pancake stacking, seemed made to measure. It culminated in a successful record attempt, which was observed and verified by an official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS adjudicator. Other witnesses to the thrilling record attempt included Little Red Riding Hood, along with Efteling visitors and employees. The audience held their breath as the final few centimetres were stacked but with a total of 242 pancakes, the world record was eventually broken.

Correct approach
John Pijnappels: “It may seem easy but we have put in a considerable amount of practice in recent months, to arrive at the best method of working and the most suitable recipe. In addition, the record attempt needed to be carried out in accordance with the strict rules set by GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS.” Fellow chef Humphrey den Otter echoes this point: “There are strict rules covering the size and thickness of the pancakes, the equipment used and, of course, the pancakes must be edible.”

Steady hand
During their successful record attempt both men demonstrated a high level of concentration and a steady hand. Efteling’s Chairman and CEO, Fons Jurgens, is proud of his colleagues:

“Our chefs have shown great initiative and perseverance in achieving this milestone and, at the same time, they have surprised our visitors with a unique and enjoyable event.”
