New Efteling dive coaster Baron 1898 opens to the public

The Efteling theme park, in Kaatsheuvel, the Netherlands, is officially one ride richer as of this morning. Today, for the first time, visitors to the park were able to experience the Baron 1898 dive coaster. On Tuesday 30 June representatives of the press and other media were able to ride the Baron 1898 for the first time and today it was park visitors’ turn. Baron 1898 is Efteling’s sixth rollercoaster and a thrill ride for daredevils with a minimum height of 1.40 metres. It is only the ninth dive coaster worldwide and is sure to increase Efteling’s appeal to teenagers. The € 18-million rollercoaster was realised in just 10 months.

Fons Jurgens, Chairman and CEO of Efteling, was on hand to gauge the first reactions by park visitors, many of whom had come especially for the Baron 1898.

“This is what so many people have been working towards in recent months. The excitement on the faces of the daring passengers and the visitors on the ground around the mineshaft is priceless. Baron 1898 is a unique and exciting addition to our existing range of attractions and one which justifiably fills me with great pride.”

Baron 1898
The new Baron 1898 dive coaster invites Efteling visitors to step into the shoes of a tough mineworker for a day. The ride’s richly themed story is based on the history of the mining industry and plays out both inside and outside the attraction. On the ride itself, visitors face an ominous 37.5-metre freefall into the mineshaft before searching for gold on a bloodcurdling ride with a top speed of more than 90 kilometres per hour
